Do men and women prefer different characteristics in mates? The answer is obviously yes just from everyday observation. Men seem to want beauty in women, and women seem to want status and material wealth in men and/or the potential to acquire resources. Scientists have attributed most of these differences to evolution, but the evolutionary framework is controversial. As a result, this article will discuss the reasoning and validity of the evolutionary framework in detail.
Women and men make different investments in their offspring. Women contribute large costly eggs that contain genetic material and nutrients. A woman will only produce about 200 to 250 mature eggs in her lifetime. Women must also cope with in utero development and an extended period of raising the child. On the other hand, men produce millions of sperm each day with only genetic material and, on average, spend less energy raising the child. The burden of raising a child is thus not equally shared between the sexes.
